What to Look for When Looking for Torches
When looking for your new torch, trying to understand what makes each model different can be daunting. To know which torch is best for you, it’s essential to be aware of torch specifications and uses.
What is the purpose of the torch that you are looking for?
The purpose of the torch will help you determine the size, type and performance required. Within the product detail page of every GP torch you will be able to find a reference to the indicated use. For instance, the GP Discovery CR41 torch is recommended for outdoor activities involving challenging situations, hiking, mountain trekking, or simply camping and relaxing.
How bright should a torch be?
The brightness of a torch is measured in lumen. When considering the lumen rating of a torch, the higher the number, the brighter the torch will appear. However, lumens do not measure how the torch shines on an object (light beam) and do not provide an indication of the efficiency of the torch.
What is the run time of a torch?
The run time of a torch is the amount of time until the torch drops below 10%. This depends on the type of light source (torches with LEDs are more efficient), battery and torch efficiency. To work out the efficiency of a torch, you can calculate the lumen rating, divided by the power usage indicated in Watts. This will demonstrate if your torch is suitable for your usage needs, as the higher the result, the more efficient the torch. Generally, brighter torches (higher than 1100 lumens) consume more power reducing significantly run time compared to regular ones. Therefore, make sure to select the amount of lumen best indicated for your activity.
What is the light beam of a torch?
When looking for a new torch, you may also consider the light beam, which describes how the light is projected. There are three types of light beams: spot, flood and combo. While flood beams are perfect for those who need a torch to explore vast spaces at a short distance, such as while hiking in open spaces or camping, spot beams are ideal for long distance lighting. The latter is recommended for route finding or fast-paced activities. Combo beams, on the other hand, provide an all-in-one light for both widespread and distance illumination. Torches with one-handed adjustable light beams will provide you the flexibility you need for your activity.
What does the IP of a torch measure?
IP stands for Ingress Protection and measures the protection from solid objects and liquids. When looking at the IPX rating, the first digit measures protection from dust and solid particles, while the second one measures water protection. This ranges from 0 to 9. The higher the number in the scale, the more protection the device has from water.
If you’re looking for a torch for outdoor activities, an IPX4 rating or more may be preferable, as this most likely means your torch is weatherproof. Generally, torches with an:
- IPX4 rating are resistant to splashes from any direction.
- IPX5 rating are resistant to low pressure water jet spray.
- IPX6 rating are resistant to high pressure, heavy sprays of water.
- IPX7 rating are waterproof up to 1 m deep for 30 minutes.
- IPX8 rating are waterproof over 1 m deep for a variable amount of time according to the manufacturer instructions.
Which batteries may be used in torches?
Torches may require rechargeable or disposable AA/AAA batteries. More specifically, all GP AA/AAA torches are compatible with both alkaline and rechargeable (NiMH) batteries. Generally, torches with rechargeable batteries (NiMH and Li-ion) are recommended for frequent use. The frequency and the type of your desired activity will determine the type of battery required for your torch. For frequent hikes, mountain biking, or other far-from-home activities, torches with high capacity rechargeable batteries are more suitable. For occasional, short distances or where you may not have access to charging points, you may opt for a torch powered with single use batteries.
Why is the weight of a torch important?
The size, weight and material of a torch influence the convenience of a torch. A torch can be as small and lightweight to fit in a key ring or a pocket, but it can also be over 1 kilo. Generally, the lower the weight, the more convenient it is to carry the torch for day-to-day needs, as an emergency light or for long outdoor activities such as hiking or mountain trekking. For instance, GP Discovery C31 handheld torch is extra easy to both carry and hold thanks to its nylon wrist lanyard and the composition in durable aluminium. This material is ideal for its heat conductivity, scratch resistance and protection against accidental shocks.
Why should you check the impact resistance of a torch?
The impact resistance of a torch is usually measured in metres. All GP torches are tested to ensure these remain functional also following a few accidental drops. You may find this information in the specifications of every product detail page.
